Professionally Installed Whole House Surge Protection

Surge-Protection-Myrtle-Beach-300x210.jpgThunderstorms remind us that it is time to write another post about whole house surge protection.  You may have heard the term “transient surge.”  This is when the electrical power has a sudden spike that surges through your wiring and will short circuit any appliance or electrical device that you have connected to your electrical service panel.  The most common cause of this sudden surge is lightning. Keep in mind that lightning does not need to strike your home directly.  By striking a nearby transformer, a spike in electrical voltage can be sent throughout the neighborhood and literally destroy the equipment in every home in the area. In today’s world, almost every device in your home that requires electricity has a circuit board similar to the type found in your computer. The only safeguard is professional installed whole house surge protection.  Not only will you be protected against a lightning spike, but protecting your entire house also will safeguard you against any fluctuations in power that are often found in the rural areas of Horry County. These fluctuations in power are caused by longer distances between service providers.  This type of fluctuation can cause serious damage to not only computers but also to kitchen appliances, stereos, and televisions that are not protected.

Whole House Surge Protection vs Retail Surge Strips

Often a homeowner will install a surge strip to protect their equipment but many of these hazards will go right through a retail power strip. Whole house surge protection is the only way to proactively guard against power fluctuations that can damage your investment in appliances and electronic equipment. A home that has been built in the last 20 – 30 years are usually larger and are more customized which leads to a more complex wiring system.  If you are a Myrtle Beach homeowner, you may be surprised that your electrical panel contains a circuit board similar to your home computer.  When a voltage strike from a transformer surge or lightning strikes the circuit board, the spike in power will short circuit the board and this will cause a surge to be sent to every electrical device in your home that is connected to the electrical network.  This is why it is a good idea to unplug ALL devices during a thunderstorm. The only way to minimize the damage to your property is to invest in a whole house surge suppressor which is specifically designed to block the lightning spike or the spike due to fluctuations in the power.  Studies have shown that a whole house surge protection will literally block amps up to 300,000. There are surge protection devices for the whole house on the market today that claim that can be installed by a self-trained or novice electrician, however, it is almost impossible for anyone other than a trained electrician to install properly.   When you work with a professional electrical contractor, you will receive the best whole house surge protection wired directly into the electrical panel of your home.  A professional Myrtle Beach electrician can quickly assess the size of your home’s electrical needs and easily calculate the level of protection that you need. When a professional Myrtle Beach electrician reviews the size of the service that you will need, they are not referring to the actual physical dimensions of the electrical panel.  In this instance, they are referring to the ratio of power that is delivered to your Myrtle Beach home and not the actual number of electrical devices that are drawing power from your panel.  However, the more valuable and the higher number of components that are drawing power from your electrical panel, the higher the risk of a catastrophe in the event of power fluctuation.   Think about how many TVs you have in your home, game devices and other electronic equipment.  I can’t tell you how many times we have entered a home to find an expensive plasma TV plugged directly into the wall panel.  This will be the first device affected in a lightning strike. You will want to take a look outside your home at systems such as security alarms, satellite dishes, and landline telephone systems.  Even though these systems are outside of your Myrtle Beach home, they are also vulnerable to an electrical surge and will need to be taken into consideration when calculating the level of surge protection coverage. Do you have a home theater system?  It the answer is yes, it is critical for you to invest in whole house surge protection.  What many homeowners with home theater systems don’t realize is that they are electrical subsystems that are operating within the home’s overall electrical system.  Even if a theater system is using a retail surge strip, it is not protected and can adversely affect the entire electrical system. By contacting a professional electrician, they can design and install a whole home surge protection system that covers your investment in your home theater system, expensive televisions and gaming systems, as well as, computers, appliances and other electrical devices in your home.

How To Hire a Myrtle Beach Electrician

Electrician-Myrtle_Beach-300x200.jpgA Myrtle Beach electrician is a specialist in the repair and wiring of the electrical components of your home or commercial property. Because you rarely need an electrician, you probably haven’t given thought about how to hire one.  However, having a good electrician available when you need any repair or re-wiring is very important. The Myrtle Beach real estate market has been great for purchasing a home and renovating it for resale or simply upgrading your existing living arrangements.  Remodeling and renovations are areas where a good Myrtle Beach electrician is especially needed.  There is nothing worse than settling into a new home or addition and realizing that the outlets are not in the right place or the wiring doesn’t work.

Some other areas where a good Myrtle Beach electrician comes in handy are:

  • Ceiling Fan Installation
  • Installation of outside security lights
  • Running electrical wiring outside of your home for a pool or deck extension
  • Extending your home by adding additional rooms
  • Completion of a bonus room for a great billiard or game area
You should take the time to determine the scope of the work before calling an electrician.  You will want to be as detailed as possible.  Write down specifically what you need to have done, even include a rough drawing of what you have in mind.  In some instances, minor repair work can be completed by someone with less experience like a handyman, but with major remodels, new construction or detailed repairs, you will want a skilled tradesperson.  There is nothing more dangerous than improper wiring which can lead to fires which put you and your family at risk. A great place to look for an electrician is through referrals.  Ask around and check the internet to find a Myrtle Beach electrician in your area.  Always ask for references and then take the time to call a few of the references.  If you have the time, you may want to get estimates from more than one qualified electrician.  Meet with each one and ask them about their experience and expertise.  Go through the scope of the project with them and ask them if they have done a similar project in the past.  Make sure they thoroughly understand what needs to be done and have them tell you how they plan to accomplish the job, how long it will take and the estimated cost. Always hire a Myrtle Beach electrician that is licensed and insured.  You will want to verify and make sure that all documents are current before they start the job.  With today’s unemployment rate being high, many inexperienced people are simply adding a sign to their truck and claiming to be a licensed electrician.  If an electrician cannot provide you with proof of insurance and proper license, don’t hire them!  There is too much at stake for your family’s safety. Don’t hesitate to ask about their experience level.  A Myrtle Beach electrical contractor that has been in business for a few years is usually a better choice than a company that is just starting.  It can be tempting to go with a new business when they offer a steep discount just to get established but you may pay for their mistakes down the road.  Remember to check references and check them out.  Myrtle Beach electricians with a happy customer base will most likely do a good job for you also. If you are getting more than one estimate for the job, you will not only want to choose the Myrtle Beach electrician with the best combination of experience and price but also someone with whom you are comfortable.  For a large project, you will want to have the project specifications in writing.  These specifications should include the details of the project, time for completing the project and the costs.  This will give you a reference point if there are problems during the project.

Understanding What Electricians Do

electrician-300x200.jpgThere’s a wide range of tasks that electricians perform. Some of these tasks include the installation of electrical and power systems in homes, buildings, and in other areas. Electricians are also responsible for maintaining wiring and electrical equipment. Aside from residential applications, and electrician may also tackle a number of jobs that involve the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in factories and other businesses. In general, electricians focus on maintenance or construction. In some cases, electricians do both. For those that specialize in construction they are mainly deal with the installation of wiring systems in homes, factories, and other industrial settings. Meanwhile, electricians that focus on maintenance primarily deal with the upkeep of existing wiring systems and the maintenance of electrical equipment. All electrician Myrtle Beach follow certain building rules and standards that are imposed within in each state. Before they could proceed with their work, electricians first need to read the blueprints. This includes finding out the technical diagram of a given home as well as the location of outlets, panel boards, and more. After determining the location of each component, the electrician could then proceed with maintenance or installation of new equipment. There are a lot of tools that electricians use. Basic equipment include screwdrivers, pliers, knives, wire strippers, hacksaws, and some power tools. Also, they will use multi-meter and other specific equipment for testing electrical lines and equipment. Apart from installation, electricians also do a lot of routine maintenance to ensure that all electrical components are working as intended. Improperly maintained electrical wiring and equipment could be hazardous to a house or building. For electricians that focus on residential areas, the work isn’t too complicated. However, electricians that focus on larger settings like factories, the environment and maintenance work will be much more complex than their residential counterparts.

What are the education requirements that an emergency electrician need?

All certified electricians need to go through an apprenticeship program and on-the-job training. This is to ensure that each individual is indeed capable of handling tasks that range from minor to major undertakings. The apprenticeship programs are comprehensive, which makes the electricians who pass qualified for work in both construction and maintenance applications. Normally, apprenticeship programs last 4 years. Within the timeframe, the electricians learn everything from theoretical to real-world applications of their curriculum. However, before applicants are allowed to partake in apprenticeship programs, they must have either a General Equivalency Diploma or a high school diploma. Electricians also need to take up some math subjects in preparation for the mathematical problems that they will encounter in real-world applications. During their on-the-job training, the apprentices are supervised by other electricians with a longer tenure and are more adept in their respective fields. Electricians will further be educated down the line even after they have finished certain programs. This is due to the fact that building codes may change and that electricians need to learn and adapt, hence the need for constant educations.

Nowadays, most states require electricians to bear a license. However, the requirements on how to acquire a license may vary depending on the state they choose to operate.

Warning Signs That You May Have Wiring Issues

Myrtle-Beach_SC_Electricians-200x300.jpgYou are watching your favorite football team with just ten seconds left on the clock, and they have the ball and they’re on the five-yard line. That’s when the lights – and your TV picture – dims and flickers for a second. You are relieved when things immediately return to normal and you get to see the last play of the game completely wipes away any concern about why the lights dimmed. It shouldn’t. Dimming or flickering lights are signs that you may have wiring or electrical issues.

Major Indications That Signal Electrical Wiring Issues.

According to electricians, the dangers of wiring problems include fires and electrical shocks, so the possibility that bad wiring may be behind issues that arise in your home shouldn’t be taken lightly. In addition to the general, house-wide flickering of the lights that I mentioned, individual light fixtures flickering can be an indication of bad wiring in that particular light fixture. Especially in older fixtures, the heat from the light bulbs may have damaged the insulation on the wires over time, presenting a fire risk. If you find yourself replacing burned-out light bulbs frequently, it can also be an indication of bad wiring in the fixture, but could also be a more general problem, like a main neutral connection that is bad. Circuit breakers that trip frequently may be a sign that you have too many electrical devices or devices that draw too much current, plugged into that circuit.  Or it may be a sign of a wiring problem. If you’ve eliminated the possibility of an overloaded circuit, have an electrician check your wiring. Do I need to tell you that when you plug something into an electrical outlet and you hear popping or see sparks, you have a problem? Typically, that is a more localized problem – you will need to replace the outlet. It’s easily accomplished, but it is a potentially dangerous situation and should be repaired right away. Sometimes you’ll encounter an outlet that’s dead – nothing plugged into it works – or a wall switch that fails to turn on whatever it is supposed to control. In those cases, first, check for a circuit breaker that has shut off. If there is one, the solution may be as simple as turning it back on. If the situation happens again, though, you need to check for faults in the wiring of that particular circuit. If there is no problem with the circuit breaker, the outlet or wall switch needs to be replaced. A particularly scary sign of electrical wiring problems is a smell of something burning – a smell that you can’t quite locate. This could definitely be the smell of overheated electrical wiring insulation. Don’t delay – have it checked. Heat. We all know light bulbs get hot (though it’s not as much of an issue with LED and CFL light bulbs as with incandescent bulbs). Electrical outlets, light switches, and electrical appliances shouldn’t be hot, though. If you feel the heat when you touch any of these items, there is a problem that needs to be repaired. Electricity is typically a quiet, unobtrusive servant that makes our lives comfortable. When something goes wrong, though, it can quickly destroy appliances, entire homes, and lives. Watch for these symptoms and deal with them quickly.

If you notice sudden flickering of lights in your home, do not take it for granted. Call Myrtle Beach Electrician Pros immediately! They specialize in residential services and protection for your home.
