Majority of Myrtle Beach Families Not Prepare For Emergencies

Electricians have seen a lot of storms in the past month and now the weather bureau is showing the possibility of a tropical storm headed our way – and it is only the end of May!  A recent study shows that 64% of American families are not ready for an emergency situation that may arise from a storm. This study was done last year in preparation for National Preparedness Month and revealed that the majority of families did not have crisis kits in their home. The two key steps families need to take are to make sure you have an emergency kit and a family communication plan. This study shows that people living in the west seem to be the most prepared with 45% of residents having an emergency kit, while the South weighed in at 35%, the East with 34% and the Midwest at 30%. A large percentage of parents have discussed with their children what to do if the power goes out.  However, it was surprising to learn that most of these parents did not discuss this situation with a baby sitter. Families that have experienced an outage in the past are more likely to prepare for an emergency situation.  The event motivated these families to prepare for the same type of emergency in the future. Electricians Myrtle Beach provided some tips on how to have a storm safe house. What Should You Keep In An Emergency Kit?
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Manual can opener
  • 3 day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery powered hand crank radio
  • Water – one gallon/person/day (minimum 3 days)
  • Cell phone with an inverter or solar charger
We are happy to see that families are talking with their children about what to do in the event of a power outage.  You will also want to take the time to put together a crisis kit.  We are headed into hurricane season and now is the perfect time to make sure that you are ready for an outage.  For more information on being prepared, visit www.ready.gov. Being prepared for summer storms just takes a little pre-planning.  Why not start your emergency kit today?

Remember to call MB Electrician Pros when you have an electrical outage that continues have the power has resumed.
